CONTRAST THERAPY

A simple, proven practice

Contrast therapy involves alternating between heat and cold (sauna & cold plunge) to support recovery, circulation, and nervous system balance. It’s a practice that’s been used for generations — not as a trend, but as a way to help the body reset, repair and adapt.

At ARKTIK, contrast therapy is approached with intention. There’s no pressure to push limits or follow a strict formula. It’s about using heat and cold in a way that feels right for you.

what it does FOR YOU

Sauna
Heat helps detoxification of the body and helps to decompress and unwind. It increases circulation, relaxes muscles, and encourages the nervous system to slow down.

Cold plunge
Cold brings clarity, alertness and improved mood. It can reduce inflammation, soreness, better circulation, sharpen focus, and stimulate the nervous system in a controlled way.

Together
Moving between heat and cold creates contrast — encouraging circulation, balance, and a full-body reset. The shift itself is where many people feel the biggest benefit.

HOW IT WORKS

  • The heat from the sauna induces vasodilation, lowering blood pressure and increasing heart rate, similar to low-to-moderate exercise.

Initially the heat causes a “fight or flight” response, followed by a deep relaxation, release of endorphins and lowering cortisol levels.

The increased heat and circulation helps soothe sore muscles, ease arthritis pain and reduce joint stifness.

Becuase of this, Sauna is a great for cardiovascular health and relaxation.

  • Cold exposure causes the blood vessels to constrict, flushing out metabolic waste and reducing inflammation in the muscles, almost like wringing out a wet cloth. which then speeds up recovery after intense exercise.

The cold shock triggers a big release of noradrenaline and endorphins, leading to feelings of euphoria, mental clarity, reduced anxiety an improved alertness

The intensity of the benefits vary between duration, temperature and tolerance.

‍ It is strongly recommended to start with short cold exposure so the body can adapt safely. As tolerance builds, duration can increase.

  • Contrast therapy works by alternating between hot and cold to stimulate circulation and the nervous system.

Cold exposure causes blood vessels to constrict, reducing inflammation and numbing pain, while heat causes them to dilate, increasing blood flow and relaxing muscles.

Switching between the two creates a pumping effect in the blood vessels, helping flush metabolic waste, deliver oxygen and nutrients, and promote recovery while also training the body’s stress response.

Contrast therapy builds mental toughness by exposing the nervous system to controlled stress, improving stress tolerance and focus, while leaving you feeling energised and clear-headed afterwards.

Do i have to use both hot and cold?

No.

Some will come for the heat.

Some for the cold.

Many will eventually explore both.

At ARKTIK, sauna and cold plunge will be tools you can use in a way that works best for you.
